Legal framework
With the entry into force of Law No. 9694 of the National Statistical System on June 4, 2019, and its amendment, the previous Law No. 7839 was repealed. This new law declares, as a matter of public interest, the statistical activity that allows for the production and dissemination of reliable and timely statistics for a truthful and comprehensive understanding of Costa Rican reality, as a foundation for efficient public and private administrative management.
Additionally, the regulations for this Law, issued under Executive Decree No. 43848-PLAN, serve to specify and clarify the obligations, powers, and functions assigned by such law to the entities that produce statistical information. It also ensures the optimal organization and management of the National Institute of Statistics and Census (INEC) as the governing body of the National Statistical System.
